Have you ever just listened to some new music and then find yourself just singing along and thinking “How the hell do I know this song?!”. Then you check your playlist and recognize the title. You then listen to it in full and hit that rewind button to listen to it again… and again.. and again.. and then you’re trying to figure out whether you like it or not. Well, that’s exactly what happened to me a couple of hours ago while sitting here at work just plugging away, listening to the latest Robert Glasper “experiment” album – Black Radio.
Of course, being a huge Sade fan, I like the original better but I also do love Glasper’s and Lalah Hathaway‘s rendition of Cherish the Day.
The other track that made me stop what I was doing for a few minutes was their rendition of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. Love the jazzy sound and also the use of auto-tune which to me, hasn’t been really used as well as old school tracks by either Blackstreet or better yet, Zapp and Roger.
Give this man a Nobel Prize, I say, for his brilliant experiments!
Robbie Majors called it and the musical genius is reaching our home turf for the Toronto Jazz Festival this coming Monday.
