Finally. A really good Missy mixtape that consists of more than just a dozen tracks. Why do I point this out? Well, the mixtape game has changed a lot over the years and the more tracks you have on the compilation, the more thought out it was. More importantly, the better the mixing and blending is.

[Throwback Thursday] Kris Kross – Jump

Chris “Mac Daddy” Kelly, half of the popular 90′s duo Kris Kross just passed away. He was 34.

Let’s take you back into time, 1992 to be exact. I was in grade 8 (same age as Mac Daddy). Baggy jeans were in. Those shiny NFL/NBA Bomber Jackets were in along with the matching hats, tag still attached for some (I personally hated that look). Travel Fox shoes were cool. And speaking of shoes, the really lucky kids had the latest Air Jordans which at that time were the Air Jordans VII and shortly after, Air Jordan VIII. Baseball jerseys were also in. Although these fashion statements were “the norm”, Kris Kross made the look unique. Admit it, you wore your clothes backwards. At least once. I remember this boy Ryan in my class did that and I thought he was badass for doing so.

When they first came out I thought “Finally, another new young ass crew with some dope rhymes and style!”. This was also the same era as A.B.C. so I was personally jonesing for more from around the same age group, style and sound, though, Kris Kross had a bit of a more mature and unique flow. Even they said so themselves: “Some of them try to rhyme, but they can’t rhyme like this”.

Here’s their first ever so popular first single that will forever be in the soundtrack of our lives. Directly below it is a very recent live performance of the duo at the So So Def 20th Anniversary All Star Concert.

Our “Riddims” archive is lonely so I thought I’d do this one up for you for this week’s edition of Throwback Thursday (formerly Throwback Sunday).

This brings us back to 90′s dancehall and I know I’m gonna sound really old but dancehall back then was the sh*t! If you agree, then keep an eye out for some future posts on some 90′s dancehall mixtapes. In the meantime, enjoy this trip back to time when Dwayne Wayne glasses were cool, fishnet tanks were (still not) cool, wearing overalls didn’t necessarily mean you were about to construct a house and the “world dance” was really the pepperseed.

Inside the Justin Timberlake/20/20 Experience

I’ve got a couple of concerts lined up for this summer and one tour that I’m pretty stoked about is the Legends of the Summer Stadium Tour with Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z. Seeing as the tour consists of a pop star and a hip hop mogul, I’m really curious and eager to see what the duo will come up with. What’s their vision? Will they be sporting a tux throughout the show? Have the infamous bandstand in the background?

If you’re maybe wondering the same thing, perhaps this mini doc and behind-the-scenes videos (some, pre-album release) will help with that vision. Not sure where “Day 1″ is but I’ll start off with the mini (CNN) doc. Also, the following videos are of JT and not Jay-Z but let’s face it; though it’s a partnered tour, fans are mostly stoked about seeing JT. No offence, Hov.

Had to wait a minute for all the vids to pile up on this one before I posted this T&C session. So these are my top 3 renditions of Rihanna and Ekkos Stay. Criteria is always impression and originality. Some may argue JaaaamiesBoooys spot on the list but most artists over sang this song and I think JB nailed it. What’s good, family?! Apologies for the lack of posts but it’s been crazy hectic (but good kind of hectic). I’ll finally be able to do some digital diggin’ for you hopefully over the next few days but in the meantime, let’s put the diggin’ aside and share with you some jackin’ – Jackin’ Jill (as in Jill Scott, that is).

** In 2011 Baltimore emcee Substantial was facing the possibility of cancer. He ended up having preventive surgery and while laid up, decided to start working on a tribute album to Jill Scott, one of his biggest influences. It was his was of staying busy while healing, and at the same time to give people their roses while they could still smell them. The result is a free project Substantial calls “Jackin’ Jill” – a tribute project from built by “Jackin” music from various Jill Scott releases. This collection of reworks and remixes of her work blended by DJ Jav form a cohesive pseudo collaboration focused on life, love & music. Even the cover art was a labor of love, hand drawn by Substantial himself.

I love originality but I also have mad respect for producers who can sample oh so brilliantly. If you haven’t picked up your copy of Justin Timberlake‘s new album The 20/20 Experience, I highly recommend that you do. The former boy band member partnered up once again with super producer Timbaland and also this time with Rob Knox and J-Roc who is well known for also producing for artists such as Toronto’s own Nelly Furtado, Mario, Keri Hilson and ~~Django~~ Jamie Foxx, just to name a few.

JT and his team really dug the crates with this album with some of the craziest samples.
